We are thrilled to announce that at our Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held tonight, Tuesday 25th June 2024, significant updates to The Oxygen Works’ Articles of Association were unanimously approved. A total of 34 individuals cast their votes in favour of the proposed changes, marking a pivotal moment in our organisation’s evolution.

Over 500 personalised emails were sent, paper copies of proposals and surveys made available in the centre and a social media and web blog campaign supported our community to get involved in the discussions and decisions.

Enhancing Our Purposes to Reflect Inclusivity and Current Charity Law

The first major update pertains to the wording of our purposes. To better align with current charity law and to ensure our language is inclusive and reflective of our mission, we have revised our stated purposes. Specifically, we have incorporated the wording under the 2005 Charity Act: “the advancement of health, and the relief of those in need by reason of age, ill-health, or disability.” By doing so, we have removed condition-specific terminology and embraced more inclusive language, such as “age, ill-health, and disability.” This change underscores our commitment to serving a broad and diverse community, ensuring that our purpose remains clear and comprehensive.

Transition to a Single-Tier Governance Structure

Another significant change approved is the transition from a two-tier to a single-tier governance structure. In our new single-tier model, the organisation will be governed by the board, eliminating the need for additional members to vote at an Annual General Meeting (AGM). Attendance at recent Annual General Meetings has proved challenging for a number of years, as confidence in the organisation and multiple opportunities and means of communication between the board and members has increased.

We believe that moving to a single-tier structure will more accurately reflect our current organisation. This change aims to simplify our governance, reduce administrative overhead, and strengthen our operational efficiency. With a streamlined structure, we can focus more on delivering our transformative support and services to individuals living with neurological and complex health conditions.

Looking Ahead

These updates mark a new chapter for The Oxygen Works, reinforcing our dedication to inclusivity, clarity, and effective governance. We are confident that these changes will enhance our ability to serve our community better and support our mission of providing the highest standard of care and treatment.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in the EGM and contributed to this important decision. Your support is invaluable as we continue to evolve and improve our services for those who rely on us.

Stay tuned for more updates and thank you for being a part of The Oxygen Works community!

Best regards,

The Oxygen Works Team
